GOSHA Special Report - Guernsey Accident Statistics 2009

The recently released past 12 months' statistics, of reported workplace injuries in Guernsey those resulting in more than 3 days' absence from work or specific major injuries) show an increase of more than 20% in the number of injuries resulting from manual handling lifting, moving or otherwise handling objects in the workplace).
The figures also confirm an increase in injuries in the hospitality sector of just under 20% and construction 7%. It was pleasing to note a reduction in injuries resulting from a fall from height and the number of slips and trips (one of the most common causes of injuries in Guernsey) also fell.
Overall the number of reported workplace injuries increased by 8% in 2009 compared to 2008, which was disappointing. As GOSHA highlighted last year, most of these workplace injuries could have been prevented by taking sensible, cost-effective precautions - such as implementing regular risk assessments and by arranging adequate initial and refresher training for employees.
