Ronez Quarry Visit

On 20 May we visited Ronez' Les Vardes Quarry in Guernsey. It was excellent.

We had a tour of the quarry, expertly led by Steve Roussell, and were given a demonstration of rock blasting using explosives - the sequence shows the effect. 5,000 tonnes of rock looked as light as the feathers of the seagulls flying above. The visit demonstrated vividly the many hazards which are present in a quarrying environment and how they can be robustly managed.

I was particularly impressed by the great teamwork between employees at all levels, the use of toolbox talks - all staff give talks to others about safely working in their role in the quarry - and the investment by the business in appropriate training and equipment to ensure the well-being of employees and visitors.

Our sincere thanks to all at Ronez for giving us an excellent insight to their business and the way they expertly manage health & safety in an otherwise high risk environment.

Special Reports

GOSHA Special Report - Guernsey Accident Statistics 2009

The recently released past 12 months' statistics, of reported workplace injuries in Guernsey those resulting in more than 3 days' absence from work or specific major injuries) show an increase of more than 20% in the number of injuries resulting from manual handling lifting, moving or otherwise handling objects in the workplace).

The figures also confirm an increase in injuries in the hospitality sector of just under 20% and construction 7%. It was pleasing to note a reduction in injuries resulting from a fall from height and the number of slips and trips (one of the most common causes of injuries in Guernsey) also fell.

Overall the number of reported workplace injuries increased by 8% in 2009 compared to 2008, which was disappointing. As GOSHA highlighted last year, most of these workplace injuries could have been prevented by taking sensible, cost-effective precautions - such as implementing regular risk assessments and by arranging adequate initial and refresher training for employees.

GOSHA Special Report - Managing Occupational Health and Safety in the Hospitality Industry

Most small employers know that occupational health, safety and welfare is important, but many employers never seem to find the time or money to attend to it. Many small employers don’t look seriously at their workplace health and safety until something serious happens to a staff member.

By then it may be too late and the costs may be enough to close your business.

So what is occupational health, safety and welfare and what does it mean to you as a small employer?

GOSHA Special Report - Health and safety in the retail industry.

Guernsey's retailers are important to our island, employing many people and providing goods and services to the benefit of islanders. Ensuring that premises remain safe and healthy places for customers and staff is an important responsibility of any business.

GOSHA advocates a sensible and practical approach be taken, not only to comply with the law but to uphold the good reputation and well-being of the business.

GOSHA has prepared this leaflet to help to remind retailers of some of the hazards and action which can be taken to mitigate or eliminate risks.

Welcome

Welcome to our website

I am delighted to be taking part in GOSHA. It promotes good workplace practices and helps Guernsey to be a safer pace in which to work.

The benefits of good health and safety management are many and varied and the consequences of failing to address or adequately address health and safety can be catastrophic and often have significant, adverse effects.

So often, inexpensive or simple changes in workplace practices or better training and awareness could have made all the difference - GOSHA provides a forum to help everyone to be better informed and to take a proactive approach to this important business and socially responsible subject.
